Fat Ham is a new American classic. One that centers the messy, complicated, joyous, terrifying and LOUD experience of life at the intersections of blackness, queerness and southern-ness. In our process we’ve been interrogating the concept of family, and what do we do with what is passed down. What do we keep, what do we reject, and, in what has been most interesting to me, what do we repurpose? While Juicy, our protagonist, is clearly at a crossroads in life, so sit all of the characters in our fair tale. Over the course of this backyard BBQ, all of our characters will be figuring some things on out! Following in the tradition of the great Black theatre makers Dominique Morisseau (https://playmakersrep.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/DhrNVa5W4AA1lhY.jpg) and Erika Dickerson Despenza, I want to share some parameters of engagement with you, dear audience. You are an active member of the community of creators in this space. So bring your full selves to the party! Cry, laugh aloud, moan, mmmmhmm, and be present in the space. As Morisseau says, “This can be a church for some of us, and testifying is allowed.” Now this is live theatre, and the actors need space to create the story that you’ve come to bear witness to, so leave plenty of room for that. But unshackle yourself from the belief that you are in an austere and sterile place. We all working to get free, and in this space, I want you to feel closer to that than you feel on the other side of that door behind you. I am so happy that you’re here. Welcome to the black-ass, free-ass community that we’ve built together for this production of Fat Ham. Sit on down and get ready to get every piece of your life. This cast is about to ea t it up, just a lil’ bit. Get you a piece.
With Love,
mychael g. chinn

When you look at the demographics of Knoxville, the people that live on the river and the people that live near the railroad experience Knoxville from vastly different perspectives. Our neighborhoods, churches, community groups, and social circles seem deeply divided along various lines. Some are the literal lines of the Tennessee River or the tracks of the railroad, and some are metaphorical, like the lines between races, religions, and ethnic groups or the cultural lines between east, west, north, and south Knoxville. The goal of River & Rail Theatre is to not just create professional theatre accessible to all Knoxvillians, but to create theatre true to the stories of Knoxville, shared collectively by those on every side of every line.
If you share this vision of Knoxville with us, if you can see it too – a packed house at the Old City Performing Arts Center, full of people who don’t look, smell, hear, see, walk, and talk the same way yet who share in the same deep, beautiful humanity; then we invite you to help us make that happen. Your contributions enable us to pay our staff, artists and team members living, professional wages; they allow us to offer pay-what-you-wish tickets, so that people can attend our performances for as little as three dollars; they cover the cost of professional lighting and sound equipment, costumes and sets, because we want to make work that holds itself to a national professional standard, that pushes the limits of what Knoxville can do. Every dollar is tax-deductible, and every penny makes a difference. Consider making your mark on this city with us.
