THE LITTLE PRINCE

by Rick Cummins & John Scoullar, adapted from the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

*Produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock, Illinois.*

We would like to begin
by acknowledging that the land
on which we gather is the unceded territory
of the Yuchi and Cherokee People.
We offer our gratitude for the land itself,
and the Indigenous people that
stewarded it for generations.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

At our first rehearsal the cast of The Little Prince asked me why River & Rail Theatre company chose to tell this story. I can’t remember a cast asking us this question so directly before. I first told them that we at River & Rail have always planned to add a play for younger audiences to our seasonal lineup. And so The Little Prince begins what will be an annual play in our season chosen for younger audiences.

Next, I shared that my family (Amelia and I have 3 children) have a ritual of “Family Movie Night” each Friday. During these nights I have seen some really good films, but I’ve also seen some absolutely terrible ones…I’m mean just mind-numbingly awful. And so, when I set about choosing a show for young people for this season, I knew it would be a story that adults would also enjoy along with children. I found that, and more, in “The Little Prince.”

Lastly, I confessed to the cast that the last few years have been a struggle for me personally, as they have been for many of us. Much of what I see in the world around me is troubling and mysterious. Life itself, the seemingly endless suffering paired together regular experiences of breathtaking beauty, is such an incredible mystery. And it is all so hard to reconcile at times. I’ve often struggled over these last years to embrace, or even accept, many of the realities with which I’ve been faced, but my children seem to accept them more easily than I do, and certainly with more grace.

What I find when I read “The Little Prince” is an invitation to embrace the mystery and wonder of life. You might also say it’s an invitation to a second childhood. It is complex, yet it’s so very simple. When the Aviator asks the Little Prince “Where are your parents!?!” and he responds with, “What is essential is invisible to the eye;” he is inviting us to embrace the mystery of our existence. The older I get it seems to me that there might just be no other way to live.

We hope you enjoy the mystery and wonder of “The Little Prince.”

Best,

Joshua

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (Author)

Antoine de Saint-Exupery, 1900 - 1944 Antoine de Saint-Exupery was born in Lyon, France on June 29, 1900. Saint-Exupery was educated in Jesuit schools. He later attended a Catholic boarding school in Switzerland before entering the Ecole de Beaux-Arts as an architecture student. de Saint-Exupery began his military service in 1921 and was sent to Strasbourgh to be trained as a pilot. He received his pilot's license in 1922 and, after a few dead end jobs as a bookkeeper and an automobile salesman, he began flying mail for a commercial airline company. His route over North Africa was the basis for his first novel, Southern Mail, in 1929. His second novel, Night Flight, became an international bestseller and was made into a film in 1933. By that time, de Saint-Exupery was married to Consuelo Gomez Castillo and was working as a test pilot for Air France. He was also working as a foreign correspondent covering May Day events in Moscow and writing a series on the Spanish Civil War. His book, Wind, Sand and Stars won the French Academy's 1939 Grand Prix du Roman and the National Book Award in the United States. He came to the United States after France fell in World War II, but rejoined the French Air Force in North Africa in 1943. That same year he published The Little Prince, a children's story of such universal appeal that it has been translated into close to fifty languages. Antoine de Saint-Exupery took off on a flight over Southern France on July 31, 1944 and was never seen again. In 1998, a fisherman found a bracelet with his name and his wife's name engraved on it, 150 kilometers west of Marseilles.

Support River & Rail

When you look at the demographics of Knoxville, the people that live on the river and the people that live near the railroad experience Knoxville from vastly different perspectives. Our neighborhoods, churches, community groups, and social circles seem deeply divided along various lines. Some are the literal lines of the Tennessee River or the tracks of the railroad, and some are metaphorical, like the lines between races, religions, and ethnic groups or the cultural lines between east, west, north, and south Knoxville. The goal of River & Rail Theatre is to not just create professional theatre accessible to all Knoxvillians, but to create theatre true to the stories of Knoxville, shared collectively by those on every side of every line.

If you share this vision of Knoxville with us, if you can see it too – a packed house at the Old City Performing Arts Center, full of people who don’t look, smell, hear, see, walk, and talk the same way yet who share in the same deep, beautiful humanity; then we invite you to help us make that happen. Your contributions enable us to pay our staff, artists and team members living, professional wages; they allow us to offer pay-what-you-wish tickets, so that people can attend our performances for as little as three dollars; they cover the cost of professional lighting and sound equipment, costumes and sets, because we want to make work that holds itself to a national professional standard, that pushes the limits of what Knoxville can do. Every dollar is tax-deductible, and every penny makes a difference. Consider making your mark on this city with us.
